Tips and tricks?

Well, not so much 'tricks' but i could do with some tips if you don't mind!
Chantelle and I are planning a trip to Florida in a couple of months. As you can imagine, i am a little anxious. Basically, i need some advice. What has worked for you. How have you worked through anxieties? How have you coped with food when away? blah blah.

I have a couple of questions. If someone could answer, i would really appreciate it.

When you are getting travel insurance, can you trust online quotes or is it best to call up to get it?
What sort of price are we talking about for a 2 - week trip?

Can you take your own food on to the plane?
What sorts of effect has the climate had on water retention and bloating?

When dressing yourself in hot weather, what clothes have you found you are most comfortable in? Obviously bikinis are NOT an option right now and, remembering that my 'style' is giant jumper, levis cut-offs and tights, this could be an issue.
Any other tips for things that you encountered and conquered or even just things that i maybe have not yet thought of?

I want this holiday to be perfect and for that to be possible, i need to have thought of every singly scenario. I know that it is going to be hard but i am determined to have a good time and having 'crisis plans' is going to ease my anxiety considerably...

  1. Sounds like a nice thing to do :)

When I went to Majorca on holiday (at the start of this depression), I got some beta-blockers to help with the flight (I was over anxious about the airport and the flight).
Clothes wise; cotton is good. Also, find out when the hottest time is for where you're going and try not to be out in it at that time.
Get bottled water from an airport shop to make sure you don't dehydrate on the plane and possibly some flight socks cos I understand Florida is a long journey.
We got travel insurance with the holiday, but I know a lot of people who do it all separately, so maybe check the high street?
Most important - make sure you have plenty of any medication you need and if you need it in hand luggage to keep the boxes/packets showing they've been prescribed to you.

Food-wise, try to stick to what you know - which should be ok for Florida. I'm allergic to garlic so I had to stay away from a lot of the spanish food :(

Oh, and remember, you're in a foreign place, where no one knows you, so you can, in effect, be somebody else if you want.

And do happy stuff to keep your mood up :)

  2. I agree with above - you are in a new place, no one knows you, and you don't know any one else. So you can in a sense be slightly different to how you are here and it will be okay?

travel insurance - I usually find supermarkets are the cheapest. Asda/sainsburys/tesco. Last time I went on holiday I forgot to get insurance haha!! So make sure you remember.

You can't take your own food past the check in and luggage checks but then you can buy whatever you like in duty free and take it on the plane :) There's always a big boots and lots of other places you can buy 'safer' food from.

The best advice is, to try not to allow your anxiety to rise too much. Because that will only make you stress and predict all the things that could go wrong, when in fact there is SO much more that could go absolutely perfectly right. Holidays are for totally enjoying. Food wise, you will find in Florida that they have most things we have over here.. don't push yourself. Just stick with what you know you're comfortable with :)

Clothes wise.. Goodness. I understand that stress. Lightweight clothes/cotton etc.. just things you are comfortable in! Main thing - don't push yourself! And ENJOY ;) xx

  3. The best way to deal with the food thing is to eat as soon as you get there. I had to do this when I went to uni, because I've had too many holidays where I've ended up ill from eating nowt 'cause the longer you leave summat the harder it gets. Plan, don't leave it until you get there 'cause you can get pretty much the same food in Florida as here, just restaurants and those kind of places have bigger portions. So plan and find a supermarket and buy your food straight away. EATEATEAT, that's the most important thing. And no pressure to eat certain things or in a certain way, as long as you're eating enough to balance your head and having fun.

Clothes- get some big men's cotton shirts and cut the sleeves off, and maybe the bottom. You'll look good and different, but you'll still be covered. Failing that, kaftan bits are a win xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  4. Food wise I was absolutely fine in Florida every time I've been. It's so touristy it's basically like being in England! Cottons good clothes wise especially if your going in a couple of months because it's quite hot then!

To be honest Florida/America is the easiest holiday I've been on anxiety/foody etc.wise. It's easy to get used to it and be able to chill out whilst your there :)
